I saw this project on someone's website linked to pinterest. It didn't come with directions, so I made up my own. I decided to have the students use black glue ( a combo of black paint and Elmers... which the students loved "drawing" with) to outline a bunch of geometrics shapes that were originally drawn in pencil. Then students let that dry overnight. The next day, we used chalk pastels to fill in each shape. I had students choose two analogous colors (color next to one another on the color wheel) to fill in each shape in their landscape and then blend gently with one finger. I think most of the 7th graders grasped the concepts and I'm really happy with some of the results I got from this project. Thank you pinterest project teacher for the inspiration! The results look really unique and finished.

I'm often inspired by things I see around me, pinterest, or maybe its what I see that leads into a combination of ideas for a project. I saw something like this on pinterest and decided to incorporate a few things together. For this 6th grade project, students began by using chromatography on their coffee filter designs. While those were drying, students used step by step instructions provided by the teacher to draw their best owl. Then students divided the owl body into sections in order to zentangle within each shape. I love how they came out! I'm always amazed how students exceed my expectations and think to add things that sometimes I don't even think of. After we glued our "dots" as moons onto the paper, students glued their zentangled owl down near the moon and then used oil pastels or markers to create branches, leaves, stars and clouds or anything else they could think of. Here are some examples of the end result.
Using a free collage maker online, students found over 36 images to insert into their grid
collage. They also use photo booth on the Mac computers to capture their own profile portrait in black and white. They then cut out their profile (which I thought I wanted in silhouette, but then I really liked the look of being able to see who was actually in the photo) and pasted it over their collage. The other half of their project was a written portion in which they had to reflect on themselves and answer 20 questions. This written portion was included in the final presentation as well. The final pieces are posted in the hallway. Come check it out! Thanks to Cassie Stephens for the awesome line sculpture lesson. The kids loved making the lines sculptures.... now I just need to figure out where to store all these 3-D sculptures!
Inspired by the book, "The Dot". students all created a dot with chromatography using coffee filters (riding the STEAM train!!)
Then each grade transformed their dot into a new art piece. See our photos below. Pre-K & K -created hot-air balloons 1- created snails 2- produced scary monsters 3- flying bats on a string 4- silhouette Jack-o-lanterns 5- 3-D winged bats over a moon 6- zentangle owls over a moon 7- Autumn Moon Silhouette Night 8- haven't seen them in cycle yet! |
