4- Fauvism Landscapes: After discussing famous Fauvist artist, we talked about parts of a landscape (foreground, mid-ground and background) . We then used pencil first to draw out the different depths of our landscape. After we outlined it in sharpie and finally the color was added the following weeks using watercolor paint- warm and cool colors on each different section.
4- Laurel Burch Cats:
4- Eric Carle Squirrels: This unit involved creating our own textured paper and using form to create an Eric Carle inspired composition.
4- Panama Molas
4- Drawing Tropical Birds: Students learn how to draw was they see with step by step tutorials
4- Snowflakes on Tongue Self- Portraits: This unit incorporated so many art principles and elements. We started discussing cool color and watercolor techniques and how to make a snowy sky using watercolor and salt for that crystalized effect. The next week we talked about shape and form in order to create our basic head, neck, hat and scarf. Then students used scrap paper to add detail for hair and markers to add on a face. We then created a 3-D tongue with snowflake.

5- Block Printing: Foam plates and block printing ink
5- Color Wheel Umbrellas & Photography: Don't have a camera or computer to upload images? Then use an alternate picture of a body from old magazines.
5- Snowmen at Night Clay Sculptures: Students imagined what each of their own snowmen would be doing at night and then produced a clay sculpture to represent it just like in the story. In this unit we discussed sculpture methods and techniques.
5- Art Therapy & Expressionism: So many of the kids said this was their favorite project. We started off talking about the job of an art therapist and the meaning behind color as well as how music affects us. We then tore up the paper and made a radial design on a large piece of paper. From their we created the facial features of one out of three animals (cat, bird, dog). We finally painted the details as the last step. I can't even take credit for this project idea. I was inspired by an art teacher's blog which I will note when I find it again.
